Sea kayaking at Fitzroy Island

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

Are you looking for a half day tour sea kayaking over top of the Great Barrier Reef while you are in Cairns? Well make it a full day trip and go to Fitzroy Island!

Fitzroy Island was once part of the mainland and a very popular place for Aboriginals to go fishing and hunting. Now that it is an island, it is surrounded by an amazing fringing coral reef.  On the island there is a luxury resort, a camping ground and facilities and also the  beach hire.

Our check in time at the reef fleet terminal in Cairns was 8am at the Raging Thunder counter. We collected our boarding passes and made our way to the boat for an 8.30am departure. It took approx. 45 min to reach Fitzroy Island. Once we got there Blythe and I got set up to go on the morning sea kayaking tour. Our guide took us for a 3 hour sea kayaking adventure to explore the Beautiful Fitzroy Island, the marine life and the pristine coral reefs that surround it.  There were 6 double sea kayaks in our group and because the weather was so nice we went to explore Shark Fin Bay and little Fitzroy Island, we stopped in Shark Fin Bay to snorkel and had a look at the coral. This is one of the best spots on the island to go snorkelling. Another nice snorkel location is between Nudey beach and the Beach hire house on the other side of the island.

When we came back from sea kayaking it was time for lunch. You can bring your own lunch or get it organized by Raging Thunder. The Raging Thunder picnic lunch included a chicken and salad wrap, ham and cheese roll, piece of seasonal fruit, energy fruit bar, drink and bottle of water (vegetarian options are available on request.)

The rest of the day for us was free!  We had the choices of snorkeling, relaxing on the beach, jumping on the water trampoline or going for a walk to explore the walking tracks available on the island; The Island’s 339 hectares are covered in lush rainforest with 94% of the island protected and managed as a National park.  Some even go to Fitzroy Island simply for the hiking with tracks such as the Lighthouse Track (3.6 k return), the Summit Circuit (4.2k return), The Secret Garden Track (1k return) and Nudey Beach Track(1.2k return).

Blythe and I decided to go for a walk to Nudey Beach and a bit of a snorkel. Marine life is abundant on this side of the island, soft and hard corals, Nemos, giant claims and parrots fish! Unfortunately I didn’t spot any reef tip sharks! We snorkeled all the way back to the beach hire hut where we decided to have go at the water trampoline!

Once the resort is open this June it will be a wonderful experience to spend the night on the island and go for a walk at night to explore the flora and fauna.

At the moment Raging Thunder is operating daily trips. You can have the choice between:
- Ferry Transfers:

- Ferry with lunch:
- Activity Pass 1: (Lunch + choice of snorkel gear or glass bottom boat tour)

- Activity Pass 2: (Lunch + snorkel gear + glass bottom boat tour included)

- Sea kayak tour: (Lunch + sea kayak tour + snorkel gear included)
Please note that there are additional fees to pay on board like reef tax and/or transfers.

Camping is also available.

Fitzroy Island is one of my favorite places in the Cairns area.
Go and see it for yourself!

Quicksilver Outer Barrier Reef Pontoon

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

The Quicksilver group of companies offers a wide range of snorkel and dive trips to the Great Barrier Reef.  This full day pontoon option is an excellent way to see one of the most pristine areas of the reef – the Agincourt Ribbon

Reefs.  This particular region is located along the continental shelf and provides an ideal environment for many species of coral and marine life to call home.

Our day started with a 7:55am pick up from our accommodation in Cairns. The full size air conditioned coach was easily recognizable with the Quicksilver logo decorating the sides of the bus.  Our driver provided a running commentary and history lesson about Cairns and surrounds on our northbound journey.  We even saw a whole field of wallabies grazing in the grass for their breakfast!  The hour long trip up to the coast from Palm Cove to Port Douglas is toted as one of the most scenic drives in the world, and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

We arrived at the quaint Marina Mirage in Port Douglas at approximately 9:15am and headed over to reception to check in with the efficient staff.  After showing our boarding passes, we were welcomed aboard with tea, coffee or chilled cordial and some bikkies. Soon enough it was 10:00am and we were on course for the Outer Barrier Reef!

The travel time out to the pontoon located at Agincourt #3 took approximately one hour and thirty minutes.  Along the way we saw the Low Isles and other various sandy coral cays that were visible at the low tide.

Upon our arrival at the pontoon, lunch was served almost immediately.  It was a delicious buffet style meal that included salads, vegetarian curries, chicken, beef, and fruit.  There was definitely something for everyone!  At the same time as lunch was being served, the first semi submersible boat ride of the day was departing from the back of the pontoon, to be continued every 30 minutes for the duration of our time at the reef.  We enjoyed our meal and then climbed aboard the semi submersible for our 30 minute underwater tour.  The views were incredible, with the glass windows providing a 360 degree view of the ocean surrounding us.  We saw so many different varieties of coral; it seemed every minute the scenery floating past us was changing!  There were also heaps of sea turtles and reef fish playing in the current of the boat.

Once we were back on the pontoon, we were so excited by what we had seen on the semi-submersible submarine that we grabbed our snorkelling gear, threw on our sun suits and jumped into the water.  There was just so much to see!  All the different hard and soft corals, along with the contrasts of bright coral and deep blue ocean provided well over an hour of swimming and snorkelling. We saw turtles, parrot fish, giant clams, and more bommies than you can count.

All too soon we were called back to the pontoon by the watchful crew.  We had time to have a quick freshwater shower and change in the facilities located on the deck of the pontoon.  We boarded the boat where tea, coffee, cordial and yummy cheese and crackers were waiting for us.

On our homeward journey, the crew had a continuous slideshow playing with all of the photos they had taken throughout the day which were available for purchase as well.  It was a great way to enjoy some of those once in a lifetime moments again.  We arrived back at the marina at approximately 4:40pm where we hopped aboard our coach and relaxed for our return journey back to Cairns.

Quicksilver pontoon is a wonderful way to see the Great Barrier Reef whether it is your first time out or your fourth.  This was a day to remember on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef!

Scenic Helicopter Flight: Half Day Green Island

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

The majority of visitors to Green Island travel out by boat.  There are a smart few that opt for a helicopter scenicflight and I was lucky enough to experience it for myself with a 25 minute helicopter flight out to Green Island a few weeks ago.

The excursion started with my arrival at the Great Barrier Reef Helicopter office located at The Pier in Cairns.  After an informative safety briefing my fellow flyers and I had a few minutes to let the anticipation build up before being led up to the helicopter landing pad.  We were able to watch it land, coming over from Cairns Airport.  It was quite loud as you would imagine, and quite windy too.  The crew members efficiently led us out two by two in front of the helicopter where we had our picture taken before excitedly climbing aboard.  We were buckled in, had earphones placed over our heads and all of a sudden we were taking off to the skies above the Great Barrier Reef.

Flying in the helicopter felt like you weren’t flying at all.  It’s such a smooth ride with no turbulence like you would get on an airplane.  There are large domed windows to look out towards the horizon, and the shapes of the windows are also great for taking photos as the domed shape minimizes reflection and flash.  As we were flying out we were able to look back and see the coastline disappearing behind us and the Great Barrier Reef appearing before us.  To say it was beautiful is a total understatement.  It was absolutely exquisite.  The stark contrasts between the dark blue ocean and the pale green shallow water combined with all the patches of coral reef provide views that will leave you wondering why you hadn’t booked a scenic helicopter flight for longer.

We continued our scenic helicopter journey over Oyster, Upolu & Arlington reefs as well as Vlassoff Cay where we spotted a few lucky snorkellers taking the plunge on the Great Barrier Reef. Although it was raining when we departed Cairns, just a few short kilometres off the coast the sun was shining brightly lighting up Green Island, proving it’s nickname – the jewel of the sea – completely appropriate.

Much too short a time later we arrived at Green Island, landing on the helicopter pad there and we were greeted by the friendly and professional Great Barrier Reef Helicopter Group staff, who took a few photos of us departing from the helicopter.  We then had around two hours to explore Green Island, go snorkelling, and relax on the beach before our boat cruise back to Cairns.  It was a perfect way to sit back and replay all those stunning images from the flight in my head – and flick through them on my camera.

Taking a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef is an absolute must do.  There is no other excursion you can do in Cairns that will leave you with such beautiful images and photos.  This is not only another way to see the reef, in my opinion it is the ONLY way to see the reef.

Thank you Great Barrier Reef Helicopters and Great Adventures

Ocean Freedom

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Ocean Freedom is a newly refurbished 20m, 5 star luxury cruiser.  The trip can be described best as a phenomenal 6 hours of diverse fun activities that allow you to get up close and personal to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef out of Cairns City.

My day began with a pick-up at 6:50 am out of Palm Cove going directly to the Marlin Marina, Cairns for a 7:30 am check-in at the Ocean Freedom boat and an 8:00 am departure.  The friendly staff are make contact with everyone and direct them towards the coffee/tea/pastries/muffins/croissants upon boarding Ocean Freedom.  As Ocean Freedom took off, the staff furthered their hospitable ways in a humorous but informative safety briefing for snorkeling and diving.  Unlike many other boats where you choose yourself which size of snorkel gear may fit you and may not, Ocean Freedom is different and the crew go around person to person fitting them for the accurate sizes.  The boat was not cluttered at all, as there is a separate room to store your bags and belongings therefore allowing for more space to move around and a roomy air-conditioned saloon. Ocean Freedom even has extra seating area on the roof for 10 lucky people at a time to relax. The forward deck is an area you can set down a towel and face into the warm wind and be the lookout for the sandy coral cay in the distance. The forward deck and aft is also a great place to snap a photo of the picturesque Great Barrier Reef.

The boat ride was just over an hour until we reached our first destination Great Barrier Reef destination  “The Wonder Wall”.  The wonder wall is the edge of the Upolu Reef and is fantastic for both snorkeling and diving.  Here you can experience one or two dives, partake in hours of snorkeling, take a ride on the marine naturalists glass bottom boat tour or even the guided drift snorkel tour, where you are taken out in a dinghy along the edge of the coral garden and snorkel your way back along the wall of the reef.  This is definitely an adventure and you never know what you will find from starfish to turtles, anything is possible.  I took my first certified dive of the day here where I was really able to appreciate the beauty of this wall from the bottom to the top as it was crawling with marine life including numerous clown fish and even a giant crawfish amongst the elephant ear corals.

Next up, the bar was opened and lunch was served shortly after.  Lunch consisted of many delicious salads, prawns, salmon, cold meats, cheeses, breads and chicken.  The fresh food really hit the spot and left us feeling energized and ready for the rest of our day.

The next stop in our day was supposed to be the Upolu Cay but due to tides not being what they were supposed to be, the cay was much smaller than usual.  The skipper simply said “no worries” and veered the boat towards the Vlassoff Cay.  The Vlassoff Cay gives only officially exclusive rights and privileges to Ocean Freedom for reef charter boats.  The boat moors 400 meters away from the island and offers constant ferries back and fourth from the cay to the boat.  The best recommendation here is to snorkel from the boat towards the island as the best corals are in the vicinity of the boat.  I personally indulged in a second certified dive here where I was very impressed with the variety and colours of elephant, spaghetti & plate corals.  We also saw 3 lagoon rays.

From this point, I felt it was time to relax for a bit on the cay, where the sand was as soft as sugar and the calm waters were shallow and warm.  The lifeguard walked the cay continually to ensure that everyone was safe and enjoying themselves.

Unfortunately after a fantastic six hours at the Great Barrier Reef, it was time to make our way back.  Cheese/crackers/fruit are served throughout the whole ride.  I highly recommend this tour as they take a maximum of 50-65 people when the boat is actually surveyed to fit 109 people.  The staff are so attentive and personal and just love their jobs which makes the day enjoyable for everyone’s needs.  Ocean Freedom is one reef boat tour I would highly recommend as a boat to choose to see the Great Barrier Reef if you are a first time snorkeler or diver as the crew is right there ready to help you with any concerns.  Ocean Freedom spends less time in transit and more time at the reef including a fun packed six full hours.  Ocean Freedoms activities are great for anyone as they give you the chance to experience the reef in many ways including the guided snorkel tours, the glass bottom boat, snorkeling straight off the back of the boat as well as the privilege of going to a secluded sandy coral cay.

No matter what your preference is, there is something for everybody on Ocean Freedom and the magic is simply awaiting you.

Hot Air Ballooning with Hot Air

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

This memorable morning starts with a pick up from your accommodation bright and early at approximately 4:30am. Your comfortable air conditioned ride then journeys up the Kuranda Range towards Mareeba so you can have a little sleep on the way. As you get to the top of the range, the sun is beginning to rise over the mountains, and the unique environment of the tablelands is a gorgeous backdrop against the budding pink sky.

Around this time your driver will start to explain to you what is going to happen once you arrive at the Hot Air balloon departure point. While you are cruising up the range, the Hot Air crew is busy setting up these massive balloons in farmer’s fields and your arrival is timed perfectly with the crew putting the finishing touches on the ‘aircrafts’. As you see them being filled with gas and hot air, it is like watching them literally come to life!

Climbing aboard and learning the ‘landing position’ is next and after a brief safety tutorial you are up up and away! Almost before you realize what’s happened – you’re off the ground and slowly climbing towards the clouds. It is absolutely amazing. The tablelands stretched out before you, a thin layer of foggy cloud hovering over the mountain tops and an absolutely breathtaking sunrise – and you are flying in a hot air balloon through it all! Looking towards the ground, there are sugarcane fields, farmer’s paddocks, mango orchards, banana trees – even wallabies bounding through the early morning scenery. Everywhere you look, it’s a different picture, a different memory. The only way to fully understand the beauty of this fantastic flight is to see it with your own eyes. At times you are as high as the mountain tops, and others you are close enough to the ground to say G’day to the farmers below. Due to the fact that you cannot steer the balloons, the pilots rely on wind currents for their direction. Therefore, the balloon is ‘steered’ towards the ground to catch a different wind current, and then back up again to head in a different direction.

All too soon, you find yourself in the landing position preparing to touch down. After a safe touchdown, you hop out of the balloon while the next group hops in and prepares for their flight. While they are taking in the views, the friendly crew snaps a few photos of you and then it’s back on the bus to‘chase’ the other balloon! Again, since the balloon cannot be steered, it is difficult to predict where it will land. This is half the fun though! It’s so exciting with the driver on the radio to the pilot trying to determine where to meet him on the ground. Finally, the second hot air balloon flight touches down in a different random field and its time to pack it up.

As with everything on this excursion, the crew makes the packing up process really fun and enjoyable for everyone. The hot air balloon is packed up with as much entertainment as possible before one final group photo is taken. After this, it’s back on the bus to head over to Ringer’s Rest for breakfast!

Breakfast is served buffet style with enough selection for everyone to be happy. There’s also more than enough champagne to go around! While you’re enjoying your breakfast, the crew is busy loading all the photos onto a slideshow that you are able to view while eating. From here, you can purchase the pictures individually or as a disc loaded with snaps of the history of hot air ballooning, as well as all the photos taken of you during the day.

After filling your boots, it’s all aboard the bus for the ride back to your accommodation. This morning is one of the most memorable experiences on offer in Cairns Tropical North Queensland and it is an absolute must do. As the saying goes – I’ve always wanted to do that!

Billabong Adventures – Half Day ATV Quad Bike Adventure Tour

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

This half day adventure is the perfect way to combine two of Cairns and Tropical North Queensland’s jewels – the rainforest and the Cairns Tablelands.  If you’re lucky, you might just get a little dirty.

Your Billabong all terrain vehicle aka ATV adventure begins with a drive up the Kuranda Range and hopefully you will make a stop at the Henry Ross Lookout to take in some of Cairns’ incredible views across the Great Barrier Reef. Not much farther on you reach the top of the range and head down a windy road towards Billabong Adventures!

The name could not be more suited to the setting of this beautiful ranch.  Upon arrival you are greeted by a classic
looking Aussie outback style homestead, complete with rolling green hills and a pond full of turtles!  Enjoy feeding the kangaroos and turtles while having a cup of tea before getting kitted out for your ATV thrill ride!

The all terrain vehicles or ATV’s are lined up and safety gear is handed out before you are given a demonstration on how to use the quad bikes.  Even those who have never ridden a quad bike before will have no trouble learning how to ride.  All precautions are taken to ensure your safety and you spend some time doing a few practice laps and getting used to the feel of the machine.  Once the nervousness has vanished and the excitement takes over, its time to hit the track!

The actual ATV track is a flattering combination of rainforest and outback.  Just when you think it’s a sandy hill
around the bend, stunning tropical rainforest appears before your eyes.  There are trunks and stumps, vines and rocks, dry river beds and massive mud puddles.  All the zigging and zagging is well worth it when you reach the summit – a breathtaking lookout with views to silence even the most excited riders.  Have a quick rest here because before you know it, you’re back in the rainforest smelling its incredible freshness.  On the way back to the Billabong homestead, enjoy a few laps around the ATV course, complete with jumps, cliffs, and rough terrain.  Be sure to let loose and take advantage of the freedom of driving these fun little bikes.

Before you know it, the billabong has come back into view and you’re having your photograph professionally snapped while you’re in action.  After returning the bikes, take stock of just how muddy you are and laugh about it!  Getting dirty has never been so much fun.

Grab your lunch vouchers and head into Kuranda to finish off this memorable morning with a delicious lunch at a traditional German Tucker House.  Take a while to meander through this small village and enjoy all the markets have to offer before heading back to your accommodation.

The thrill of the ATV’s stays with you long after you’ve departed Billabong Adventures.  This is definitely a morning of memories that will last through the rest of your vacation, and for years to come.

Quicksilver is the Great Barrier Reef - Fly/Cruise.

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

My day began with a perfectly timed pick-up from Palm Cove by the Quicksilver coach at 8:20 AM.  The driver names “Wazza” enthusiastically introduced us to our day by going over the highlights, inclusions and the importance of the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs.  Through studies and observation it has been found that the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs has the best weather conditions and visibility on the reef despite whatever is going on in-land with the weather.  Furthermore from that, it is incredibly visible from outer-space due to the large bommies of corals, the drop off at the continental shelf and the bright colours.  The company simply adds to this by using their Wavepiercing boat – Quicksilver which pierces right through those waves, allowing for minimal rocking of the boat and manages to get out and back from the outer barrier wall of the reef in the same length of time that most other boats would only get half the distance.

The option of flying out to the reef for an extra charge was available.  We figured that we were going to do this right and take advantage of this once in a lifetime experience.  We had 40 minutes to kill upon arrival at Marina Mirage Port Douglas so we headed next door for a scrumptious breakfast on the waters edge.  We were shortly picked up by the Great Barrier Reef Helicopter girls and taken down the road to their office for a brief safety lesson and weigh in.  As we boarded the helicopter, I knew I was in for an amazing ride!

As we took off, we headed towards the Daintree Rainforest and our friendly Captain Nigel excited us as he gave us an overview of what we were seeing as well as the history and importance of being able to fly and see the only place in the world where two world heritage sites meet!  We flew through magnificent dips until we changed directions and headed for the Great Barrier Reef!  Nigel pointed out every island/reef and everything under the sun that would interest us.  He even lowered the heli to almost sea level as we reached the undine coral cay, where the company takes many couples to get engaged!  There was no engagements planned for this particular day but we did manage to see a humongous turtle and an enormous manta ray.  As we uplifted away from the cay, Nigel was sure to fly on a slight slant so we could look right down into the crystal clear waters at the marine life and corals.

We continued our flight through the clear blue skies, starring down at the reef.  It really does give the impression of the Great Barrier Reef seeing it from above as a wall of corals.  I couldn’t believe my eyes!  We were soon able to see the Quicksilver pontoon in the distance.  The boat was just pulling up.  Nigel flew us around the pontoon a couple of times in order to attract attention and make a grand appearance.  The guests in the helicopter said that they felt like “superstars!”  We landed on a platform about 500 meters from the pontoon and were met by another member of the Great Barrier Reef Heli staff.  We thanked our captain Nigel and hopped into the boat.  If you don’t get the chance to fly out to the reef, I highly recommend a scenic flight or even a charter with the Great Barrier Reef helicopter group as it is a memory that will last a lifetime.

It was now 11:15 AM and time to head in for some lunch.  The tropical buffet consisted of a wide variety of cheeses, meats, vegetables, breads, salads, pasta, curry, beef, lasagna and rice.  The bar is open for anyone wishing to purchase non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages.  Upon finishing lunch, we realized that the semi submersible was going out for its next tour.  This would be our first adventure at the pontoon.

The semi submersible is best described as a boat with a basement and 360 degrees of window all around you to see the corals and fish.  As a passenger on Quicksilver, you get unlimited access on this adventure that takes approximately 25 minutes.  While you are driving around in the semi sub, you are bound to see a vast variety of fish, corals, shells and exciting marine life.  The tour is lead by one of the incredibly knowledgeable marine biologists onboard the boat.  You are destined to learn and see so much more than you’ll expect!

As you wander around this spacious 2 level pontoon, you’ll notice many areas to relax, take a seat and areas that are shaded from the sun as well as a sundeck.  There is a bar as well and safety bags where you can store personal belongings with the friendly staff.  Hot water and cold water showers are found on the main level as well as even a Great Barrier Reef Post office box so you can send a postcard directly to your friends and family from the actual experience itself!  The underwater observatory is a definite must see where you can walk down a short flight of stairs to see a clear view of the Agincourt Ribbon Reefs as well as the fish.  Below the windows is a brief description of the marine life that you will see.

The next stop was to the designated snorkel area.  This particular area is supervised by life guards.  There are also rest stations to take a break and an easy access into the water snorkel platform.  Interested in diving? This takes place just past the snorkel area and is available for intro divers and certified.  There is a chance to do up to 2 dives in which your guides will take you to 2 amazingly different but beautiful and unique sites.  If diving is not your cup of tea, perhaps the sea walker helmet platform walking will work for you.  A helmet is placed on your head in which fresh air is being pumped into.  You can even wear your glasses if you wish, as your face and hair will stay 100% dry.  This is suitable for non-swimmers too but you must be above the age of 12 years and not suffer from asthma nor be on other medications.

After 4 full hours at the Reef, it’s time to say goodbye and get back onboard to return back to Port Douglas.  The Quicksilver boat was beyond amazing in terms of stability.  It was so smooth and amazing how fast we were going and not able to feel any bumps.

For those who are very prone to sea sickness, travel calm tablets and cordial are available free of charge. However we do highly recommended that you start your course of seasickness tablets the evening prior to your reef trip and then with breakfast the morning of your reef trip.  After an hour and fifteen minute smooth ride, we were back in Port Douglas.  The Quicksilver coach was there to meet and greet us.  We hopped onboard and made our way back to Palm Cove.

Overall, the reef, the staff, the activities on the pontoon, the wave piercing boat and the beautiful helicopter ride out to the reef all achieve a 10 out 10 and two enthusiastic thumbs up!

SKYDIVING WITH SKYDIVE CAIRNS

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Today is the day of the ultimate adrenalin rush I was ever going to have. On arrival at the Skydive Cairns office we were given some forms to obtain our parachuting license and we were made aware of the dangers that came with the exhilarating activity. After I had signed my life away it was time to make the decision on DVD & photo purchasing I wasn’t going to do the most craziest thing I have ever done and not have every minute of it recorded, I purchased the handy cam DVD which was great because I was recorded from start to finish however this did not come cheap.

Then it was time to get some waterproof pants on and meet my instructor who had my life in his hands! He ran through the safety procedures and landing positions also got me in my harness all hooked up & before I knew it I was on the bus heading to the airport. On arrival at the Airport the aircraft was ready to take off which is great because there wasn’t a lot of waiting time still being recorded I said my final goodbyes as I stepped on board.

For someone who can talk every minute of the day I didn’t have much to say at all. In fact the whole aircraft was quiet I was happy to enjoy the view but don’t worry my instructor was sure to let me know how many feet we were climbing. The flight was around 20 minutes before we reach our desired 14,000 ft my instructor buckled my karabiner’s then shuffled me forward to the open door of the aircraft that was it no turning back now or no time to be scared I was about to be thrown out of an aircraft door 14,000ft high the adrenalin that was running through my body was indescribable. You can just see the other skydivers being tossed out it happens so quickly I was the last jumper so I had to watch everyone leap out made me a bit more anxious.

When my whole body was out of the aircraft I got in position then I was out freefalling through the clouds screaming my lungs out it was the most craziest feeling falling helplessly it lasted around 60 seconds and the whole time I forgot I was being filmed, then my parachute came out and the glide begins the views are spectacular you have the reef  & mountains on the horizons the paddocks below and your mind just takes over your body it’s a quite surreal feeling as you come to terms with what you have just done. The instructor lets you take control for a bit to steer the parachute, before landing you are asked to position yourself for landing I had a great landing it was a smooth one no falling over and that’s it it’s all over.

You kind of pinch yourself as if to say I’m alive still being filmed you are questioned how your experience was I was lost for words it was amazing your kind of in a trance it’s quite funny to watch everyone just blown away by the x factor. On the bus ride home it’s very chatty with everyone on a high. On arrival back at the skydive office time to take off your skydive outfit and collect your belongings and your DVD or photos that you have purchased and on your way you go with a memory of a lifetime.

A huge thank you to the jump crew they were fantastic.

Hot Air – Champagne Breakfast & Balloon Ride

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

No need to put away a whole day of your vacation for a day trip when you can go to Mareeba. Here you will enjoy a full hot & cold buffet breakfast with champagne, and a magnificent sail in the air in one of the world’s largest hot air balloons. Return transfer back to your accommodation all before 11:00 AM!  The day begins with an early pickup from your accommodation at approximately 4:15 AM.  The friendly driver will pop on a video for the ride about hot air ballooning history and safe practices.  This 10-minute video is informative and creates excitement for what you are about to experience.  Time to take a rest now, as the bus has to make its ascent up to Mareeba.

Once in Mareeba, you will hear the driver and guide speaking over their 2 ways.  This is because everyday is different with hot air ballooning and the place that the balloon will take off from is unknown until 10 minutes before it takes off.  The departure point is dependant on the winds speed, direction & overall weather.  While they are deciding, you will have a 10-minute rest stop in Mareeba.  Be sure to use the facilities, as there will not be any on the balloon.

After the 10 minute break, the drivers will do a head count on the bus and head towards the decided departure point. Once there, group 1 will be loaded into the balloon.  Group 1 gets the pleasure of seeing the sunrise while the balloon lifts off the ground.  As the balloon takes off, a small helium balloon is also unleashed.  This is done in order to see the approximate direction in which the hot air balloon will go.  Now it’s time for the bus and group 2 to go “balloon chasing”.  It is unknown at all times where the balloon will land, so the balloon driver and the bus guide keep in constant contact over their 2 ways.

After 30 minutes in the air, they finally make the descent to the ground and it was our turn.  The friendly balloon staff carefully loaded the basket only allowing one at a time in on each side in order to make certain that the basket had equal weight on each side.  The basket has 4 sections with 6 people in each, which also allows for lots of space for everyone.

In seconds, our balloon driver Sam had us off of the ground and in moments had us overlooking the beautiful tablelands of Mareeba. I was so surprised at how incredibly smooth the ride was.  This allowed everyone to feel very safe.  As we soared through the sky at dawn the horizon showed a mix of clouds, which made for an amazing once in a lifetime photo.

After 25 minutes of soaring through the skies, we began to make our descent.  As we flew over the forests, we saw many wild horses and kangaroos.  Our first spot that we were to land was right on a farm house, so back up we went to a new landing spot as Sam, the balloon driver felt that the residents of the house might not be so happy with us all landing on their front porch.  Minutes later, Sam announced for us to get in our landing positions, which means, knees bent, holding onto the  rope handles in front or us and with our backs against the soft padding.  As we successfully landed in an open field we gave Sam a hand for his hard work.  But what were we to do with the now landed balloon that lay there in the field?

The beauty of being group 2 meant that you got the opportunity to pack up the balloon as a group.  This meant flattening the air out of it, wrapping it up and then managing to put it in a 2×2 meter bag… How was this possible we all thought?  After a 15-minute wrap up of the balloon it was a success and we managed to fit it into the bag.  The staff loaded the basket onto a trailer and we all jumped on the trailer to get a ride out of the field and to the bus, which was awaiting us at the road close by.

The bus ride going to breakfast was filled with laughter and excitement with everyone’s thoughts and opinions about the incredible experience we all had.  When we arrived for breakfast, we were welcomed by a cold crisp glass of champagne to congratulate us on our first hot air ballooning experience!  Breakfast included bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, a large variety of fruits, cereals, toast/breads, Coffee, Tea, Juice and much more.  There was even miso soup and a pasta dish in order to cater to a large variety of breakfast options.

While eating breakfast, pictures are shown of everyone from the days experience on TV’s that surround the dining area; meanwhile these pictures/DVDs are available for purchase onsite. It’s not everyday that you go up in a hot air balloon so make sure that you purchase at least one of your pictures.  Furthermore, a souvenir flight certificate is given to every individual who went up in the balloon for congratulations.

After breakfast, everyone jumps back on the bus to return home.  The whole bus was in such high spirits after the experience.  All of us agreed, “We’ve always wanted to fly in a hot air balloon… And we did it!!! For more information and details on how to book this fantastic experience click here

Skydive Cairns – 14 000 Feet

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

What better way to see Cairns, the ocean, the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforests in less than 5 minutes? Flying through the air above it all and seeing it first hand with no windows while soaring through the air.  Today is the day that I was to accomplish my first tandem skydive.

I arrived at 82 Grafton St Cairns to the Skydive office to be greeted with some small paperwork and was soon given the appropriate gear of skydive pants, goggles and a harness that would attach me to my skydiver professional Ben.  Ben along with the rest of the instructors were incredibly knowledgeable in giving us the safety talk and even practicing how to communicate while soaring through the sky.

For the first 15 seconds, we were to keep out arms crossed on our chests, then when our tandem dive professionals felt it was the right time to open up our arms, they would gently tap our shoulders to spread our arms like a birds wings.  When we slid out of the plane we were to arch our backs in order to feel comfortable and free while falling.  We had to wear our goggles until the parachute had gone up and lastly lift our feet up as high as we could without bending our knees for landing.

I couldn’t miss the chance to be able to see myself doing such a stunt so I took a peak at the different options of getting the digital photos or DVD.  The DVD options were either the tandem diver professional tapes the jump on his hand-held cam, or that another dive professional jumps in front of you and tapes it from there.  I decided on the hand-held cam package.

My video started as we left the office and headed to the group van.  We were on our way to the plane that is specifically made for skydiving that would be taking us 14000 feet above sea level.  Once at the take off area, we all slid onto the benches facing the opposite way that the plane was going.  As the plane took off, it suddenly hit me what I was about to do.  No turning back now though, it was show time.  One of the girls excitedly said “okay, this is it, let’s go!” while her tandem dive professional laughed at her stating “hunny, we still have 9000 feet to go before jumping”.  It already felt like we were so high… The plane suddenly grew very silent.

After a 20-minute scenic flight over Cairns, the rainforests, the Great Barrier Reef and islands, it was time to see this with no windows.  The camera was rolling and suddenly the door of the plane was removed.  This was it!  After the first tandem skydivers jumped, time seemed to move so fast that within what seemed like seconds, it was my turn.  As I got off of the bench and sat on the edge of the plane with my legs dangling out, I took a deep breath.  Ben asked me “Are you ready?” and as the adrenaline began to flow, I crossed my arms on my chest, let out a scream of excitement and we were off in the air freefalling.

Was I terrified anymore? Absolutely not!  How could I be with the amazing scenery below me and incredible views that I was about to experience while soaring through the air.  It felt incredibly natural while free falling and after those first 10-15 seconds, Ben tapped me to open my arms as if I was soaring.  After over a minute of freefalling through the air, I felt a sudden jolt and up we went.  When the parachute went up I removed my goggles and looked around me.  We were calmly soaring above the beautiful tropics. Ben pointed out points of interest such as the Cane fields, the reef and Green Island. First and foremost he was sure to ask me how I was, and with a smile stretching from ear to ear, I yelled back “couldn’t be better!”.

Before lading, we had some fun steering the parachute.  I lifted my legs for landing while Ben caught the ground with his feet.  Ben immediately unhooked us, congratulated me on a job well done as we watched the others land behind us.  Back on the bus we went for an incredibly excited bus ride back as we all shared our personal thoughts of our individual experiences of how we felt jumping out of the plane.  I was even able to watch my video on the bus to see how it looked.  I looked like I was having a blast of a time with a priceless smile.

Back at the Skydive Cairns office, we all collected our belongings and received our congratulatory certificate for challenging gravity and winning while jumping out of a perfectly functioning airplane.  It was an incredible experience that I thought I would only do once, but now couldn’t wait until the next time.  I would highly recommend skydive Cairns not only for just the jump experience but also for their incredibly friendly jump staff that are so passionate about skydiving.  The staff was telling us that they did about 8 skydives per day at work and on their days off never missed the chance to do more.  The comfort level of jumping out of a plane is so much better when you’re doing it with someone who is knowledgeable about skydiving and is excited and motivated!

Don’t miss your chance to take part in this eye opening, adrenaline rush with breathtaking scenery while visiting Cairns.  It is an experience that you will take home with you forever and never forget. To find out more details and make a booking phone 1300 761 612.

Hot Air Ballooning with Hot Air

Monday, June 29th, 2009

3.30am I woke to the sound of my alarm going off very early wake up but there is no time for the snooze button this morning I was about to embark on the most amazing scenic flight & I was excited.

At 4.30am my transfer arrived at The lakes Resort Cairns. I was very warmly welcomed at such an early hour and there I was on my way to through Kuranda, The Tablelands & onto Mareeba. Along the way your driver will provide commentary which is very interesting and informative. Once we arrived in Mareeba the bus driver made a brief restroom stop before heading onto the launch site they decide on.

The way the pilots decide on the launch location is they blow up a helium balloon and let it go and see what direction the wind is blowing. Once the pilots are happy with the launch location they start preparing the balloon to watch this is fantastic. The actual basket holds up to 24 passengers and is extremely comfortable with cushioned velvet covering on the insides of the basket. Hot Air own the largest balloon in Australia. I was on the 2nd flight so I was able to watch the 1st flight take off it is such a smooth take off.

Once the 1st flight is well and truly up & away the balloon chase starts for the people on the 2nd flight. The pilot keeps in radio contact with the bus driver as hot air balloons don’t have any steering wheels so which paddock they land in is not known. It’s quite possible you will end up at about 3 different landing locations but have no luck. This makes your waiting time pass quicker it’s lots of fun.

At around 7.30am it was my time to board the basket. Now ladies I would highly recommend not wearing a skirt as you have to physically climb up and over the basket. Once everyone is in position in the basket the pilot goes through a safety & instruction tuition. Then it’s time for the photographer to take a happy snap before you take off. The take off is so gentle that if your not looking you wouldn’t even realize you have taken off. During the flight the pilot will give some very interesting facts about the balloon & commentary along the ride.

I was lucky enough to have the most breathtaking view a thick blanket of fog over the valley with the mountain peaks just popping out then the sun rising with blue sky it was the most amazing thing I have seen. You really feel like you are floating. During your 30 minute flight you will be able to capture the most unbelievable pictures and if your lucky enough you will spot kangaroos & horses roaming around the bush. The flight is so relaxing & a great way to start your morning off. As your decent starts the pilot runs through the landing position once again and tells you to enjoy the last minutes of your flight. When the pilot says landing positions it’s time to hold on and get in your brace position as you touch down you may hit the ground a bit rough and bounce a few times before you come to a hault. I had a smooth landing luckily.

When your safe & sound back on the ground it’s time to help pack up the balloon. This is a great activity as it gets all the passengers involved & it’s lots of fun. Once the balloon is all packed up it’s time to board the bus and off to breakfast. Breakfast is at Ringers Rest a beautiful ranch on the outskirts of Mareeba. Delicious buffet style food is what you can expect to be eating from cereals, fresh local fruits, hot bacon & eggs including international cusine, fresh pastries, juices, tea & coffee & a glass of Champagne to celebrate everyone is catered for.

After breakfast has finished the morning comes to end & all passengers are transferred to either their hotels or even airport drops off can be pre arranged.

This tour suits anybody it is a wonderful experience from young to old everyone will be amazed by hot air ballooning. For those wanting to celebrate a special occasion what better way than a Hot Air Balloon flight with HOT AIR BALLOONING.

White Water Rafting the Barron River

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Everything about this tour was just too easy! Pick up and drop off right to the front step of your hotel. The guide will prepare you for your day or afternoon of rafting while giving you a bit of a tour on the way to the Barron River. The afternoon tour was excellent because it only took about four and a half hours out of the day from start to finish.

Once at the river you will be given the appropriate gear for the trip downstream including shoes, a helmet and paddle. Make sure that you are wearing clothes you are prepared to get wet, preferably a bathing suit if you take the opportunity given to go for a swim. After a few simple instructions and rules to go by your rafting adventure starts before you know it. The Barron River is not a violent one but still has grade three rapids in a couple of spots. This is definitely the spot try white water rafting for the first time. The scenery is terrific so take some time to marvel at nature’s beauty. If you are an experienced rafter this will still be an enjoyable trip to see one of Queensland’s treasures. The river has a dam that releases water gradually to create a smooth ride. There are many twists and turns and quite a few drops in the river along the way. A photographer takes pictures at several points down he river so be sure to have a look at yours. These are done while you are going over the most impressive of drops.

The instructors are very knowledgeable and experienced so everyone is in great hands. It takes about an hour to get down to the bottom of the river from start to finish so it is quite an intense experience. The guides made the experience really easy and took any of the stress away that you could have in the onset. This is a tour that is suitable for just about anyone from kids to seniors. It is still thrilling enough for the adrenaline junkies especially if they have not rafted before.

Once the rapids are done there is a short paddle to the exit point where you will catch back up with your bus. I absolutely loved this tour because it was not a long day and the value was exceptional. The staff were full of laughs and made the day so much fun. This is definitely a tour that everyone should try even if you are a little faint at heart don’t let that stand in your way. For more information please visit Foaming Fury

Why I jumped out of a perfectly good Plane!!!

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Well it started with an email and some how I got roped in hook line and sinker.
But I am very happy that I did.  The day started with the sun shinning and the brightest blue sky I have ever seen.  Tammy and I met Florence at Skydive Cairns (I had to get Tammy to drive, as I was unable to change gears due to legs shaking uncontrollably),
We had to fill out paper work and sign our life away, I couldn’t read as my brain was in over drive the only word I could see was - this is DANGEROUS, but signed anyway knowing these guys were professionals and I trusted them with my life.
After a nervous toilet stop, we were given these funky MC hammer pants to put on, after a little sideways dance and a little of, you cant touch this, our instructors introduced themselves and geared us up with our harnesses.
A quick demonstration on what we have to do getting out of the plane, in flight and when we land and then into the bus we go off to the airport.
There awaits us the Green Machine (our aircraft) again we go through the motions again head back, hips forward, legs back and they show us where we will sit before we jump,  we all climb in, all snug like a bug in a rug.
The plane ride is an experience in itself, this turbine power Cresco had so much power we were up in the air in no time so no backing out now, the nerves were really setting in and I  was feeling very parched.
The view was amazing over looking the Trinity Inlet and the surrounding mountains, poor Tammy had to sit right next to the door therefore constantly reminded of how high we were, I glanced over at her a couple of times and she was the same colour as the plane.
The guys let us know at 9000 feet this is where our shoot will release so only 5000 feet to go, then goggles on, doors open and from here it all went so quick.
Tammy was the first to go, then Florence and then lucky last me.  I can’t really tell you what was going through my mind at the time as I was sitting on the step I imagine it was pure fear (specially when I saw the DVD and the look on my face) but that only lasts for a second once you launch your self out and are freefalling it’s the most amazing feeling I have ever felt, it almost felt surreal.  The panoramic views were awesome; mountains, ocean, and inlets meandering everywhere it does not get any better then this.  The free fall last for a minute so you are falling approximately 100 feet a second, but at the time it feels like you are flying.  Once the parachute goes up it’s a nice peaceful trip down, the instructor loosens you up and as you descend you go through the landing technique, once the formalities are over you can sit back and enjoy the ride.
As you get closer to the ground the instructor tells you when to put your feet up, which is quite hard especially if you’re not very flexible, this is to avoid a bumpy landing.  We landed safe and sound on terra firma, letting the adrenalin rush take hold.
What an amazing experience, defiantly what to do it again!!!!!!

Skydive Cairns - The best thing I have done in my life!

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Everything started with a phone call from Tammy my co-worker at TTS.
She asked me if I tried skydiving before as she would like to give it a go.
I told her that I did it once and it was… Magic!… And that I would be interested to do it again.
I don’t know how (!?!?!) but Louise, another co-worker, ended up as being part of this wonderful experience….
So Tammy, Louise and I met at the Skydive shop at 09.00am last Monday.
It was THE perfect day: No wind, no clouds at all, just perfect.
First we had to fill in a bit of paperwork. My tandem/instructor was Ronnie and he gave me all the instructions on how to become a good skydiver (I wish!). I could already feel the adrenalin and was looking forward to this jump!
Time to get to the airport where our plane (a Turbine powered Cresco: Spacious, fast, custom built) was ready to take off. On board we had: The pilot (of course), 3 crazy girls (us), our 3 tandems/instructors and 3 professional camera crew.
The plane took off and we enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the city of Cairns, the Rainforest and the Reef, especially Tammy who was sitting next to the exit (How scary is that!!!!)
After 10 minutes we were already reaching 14 000 feet and our jump location.
Go Tammy Go!    I was next and Louise was the last one.
I sat on the exit/stairs of the plane, flashed a big smile to the camerawoman… and off we jumped. The feeling was just amazing, you will only understand when you try it. Not scary at all just the adrenalin pumping.
I felt like a little fish swimming in the air (If you watch the video you will understand what I mean). After the minute freefall Ronnie opened the parachute and we were flying in the sky, it was so peaceful and we enjoyed the views for 5-6 minutes before landing.
After you experienced this kind of feeling/emotions you really are another person.

In my opinion we should go skydiving every morning before work…

Tammy, Louise: Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful adventure with me!

And to every person who read this story: You should give it a go; it’s really worth it and not scary at all.

14,000 FT Rush with Skydive Cairns

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I don’t know if you do but I have a top ten list of things to do before I die!  Skydiving is in my top 5 not that I am thinking of carking it anytime soon!!  So as this thought had been playing on my mind for some time, I decided to take some action!
I asked a couple of my colleagues if they were game and sure enough Florence the daredevil was really keen and with a bit of persuasion Louise also said she would join in.
So last Monday it was off to the Skydive Cairns office at 9.00 am for our briefing.
It was then time to fill in some paperwork and be introduced to your tandem master.  The person I was handing my life over to was Max he was great.  He showed me all the moves I needed to make, made sure I had the harness in place then it was off to the General Aviation for our flight.

In the bus on the way I could really feel my nerves starting to play havoc and my mouth all drying out!!  Lucky at the airport there is a water fountain!

Before I knew it we were onboard the Turbine powered Cresco which looked awesome as it was painted green along with a big mouth that had a tongue hanging out painted on the  front!  Very fitting as I wondered if this is how I would look up in the air, green with my tongue hanging out!  Well I nominated myself to go first so I entered the aircraft last, and had a great view as I was sitting right in front of the door (which is clear) so I could see a fantastic view of the sea then the land.  When we had reached 14 000 ft the door opened this is when I was starting to freak out as I new it now that I had to make the plunge down!

My cameraman went out first then I placed myself with Max strapped to my back onto the ledge.  All so quickly and in position I was off and away!!!!!  The feeling is pretty indescribable one minute of freefalling down.  My face contortioned, but oh so invigorating.  When the parachute opens it is a big sigh of relief and time to relax and enjoy the view as it takes around five minutes to land.  I managed to land on my feet.
As soon as I landed I would of loved to do it all again as it was such a fantastic experience and not really as scary as I thought!

Being first I got to see my other friends land and run over and greet them, it was then back to the Skydive Cairns office where we go to watch our DVDS and have a laugh.  This was such a fantastic experience and having being able to enjoy it with two great friends made it even more memorable!

Having a Blazing Good Time - ATV & Horseriding

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

It started out with an idea to play in the mud as big kids do and to ride a horse! On a fine Saturday approx 3 weeks ago, I was collected at 8am by Annie my host from Blazing Saddles.  As I was the only person to be collected from the Northern Beaches that morning, Annie let me on a little known secret that we are to stop at Trinity Beach Meats to collect  the hamburgers for lunch - more about this later.

We arrived at Blazing Saddles at approx 8:30 am, on arrival I signed myself into the Visitors register, paid my $12 insurance levy and completed the necessary paperwork. Then I was advised to help myself to a complimentary beverage of coffee!

Around 9 am the remaining adventure seekers and my self were fitted with our helmets & made sure we have suitably enclosed shoes. One fellow only had thongs so he was given gum boots to wear!  Appropriate footwear on we were then lead over to the ATV (quad bike) area.   Here we were met by our ever jovial safety orientated hosts Mariah & Texas.   It was a bit daunting at first to be getting on an ATV for the first time.  However Texas gave us a thorough run down on these big boys toys (suitable for teens as well under his instruction of course.)  At exactly 9:20 am we were off in our group of seven to the training tracks, surrounded by rubber tyres and mini jumps etc. This obstacle course has been designed so you can become 1 with your ATV and have time to practice your driving skills.

At approx 9:45am we then started on a 2 hour journey over the fantastic 1200 hectare property that is Blazing Saddles. In the first stage for approx 20 mins we all rode along together, both Mariah & Texas both check your level of confidence and ability to ride the ATV, then the group is split in two with the more confident riders going with Texas into the deeper wilderness of the property.  After a further 20 mins of honing my ATV riding skills we stopped for a rest and much needed drink of water to wash the dirt/dust off our teeth.  After a short break as we continued our ride I was to join Texas in the more advanced riding group.

During this adventure I got bogged in creeks twice and  by the third bogging I was experienced enough to get myself out of trouble, I also became separated from the group at one stage as I was left in wake of their dust, so for approx 5 mins, I was lost in the depths of the vast property.  In my wisdom I turned around and back tracked however still managed to drive over the top of a small termite mound and took the top off it.  I can see why the ATV’s are fitted with a bull bar!

At approx 11:45am we returned to base camp & parked the ATV’s and headed to the shed to wash up & then be served  a buffet barbecue lunch with the best juicy burgers. Well worth the wait after a full throttle morning.

After lunch at 12:30 it was off to be saddled up, for our 2 hour horse ride.  My guide this time were Abigail & Alison, these ladies both love working with horses & are very passionate about what they do. They guide you in the correct ways of handling and riding horses.   On this occasion I had not sat on a horse since I was 8 yrs old.  So I did not have a lot of confidence.   However after riding Wattle (my horse) for 15 minutes it all came back and I felt really confident.  By the end of the afternoon I felt I could see no problems in getting on a horse next time and go for a more advanced riding experience. At one stage wattle insisted in standing in the creek and not moving. After a quick chat with her we were on our way once again.   Remember you will get dusty dirty & wet on these activities!!  Both activities are must do when visiting the Cairns region.  This is a  perfect start or finish to your day & you can add Hot Air Ballooning to you adventure in the morning or also combine either ATV or Horse Riding with the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail.

Prepare for the flight of your life - AJ Hackett Minjin Swing!

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

I was very impressed with the crew at AJ Hackett, they were very professional and concerned with safety as a priority. My 9 year old son and I were directed to the Minjin platform where we were strapped in for the flight of our lives! Once harnessed and helmeted up we were elevated to a breathtaking height of 45 metres. We overlooked the lush rainforest and had an amazing view all the way out to Green Island. We also had a view to our left of the Bungy Platform and realized we were almost as high as the bungy jump platform (actually only 5 metres shy of it).  The best part of this swing was that we were in control of the release. My son and I held on to each other as we counted down 3-2-1 then we let the cord rip and we were off!

The initial drop of maybe a few meters was a really liberating feeling. Being in a horizontal position and then to drop a bit before the slack on the rope picked up and we were FLYING!!!! Speeds of up to 120km/h can be reached. 45 metres to 1 metre in just 3 seconds! We soared over the rainforest and the AJ Hackett building back and forth and back and forth. It was the best fun we have ever had!!

Creating Dust Storms - ATV riding

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Just wanted to let everyone know what a fantastic time is to be had with Blazing Saddles on there  ATV’s. We actually started off early and drove up the Gillies to go for a swim at

Lake

Echam, then continued on to Kuranda in the afternoon for lunch and a walk through the Heritage Markets.  It made a great start to the day, before our real adventure for the day began.  We arrived at Blazing Saddles at 2pm which is only 8-10 mins drive from Kuranda.  As we arrived earlier than the transfer coaches, we had time to have a look around and check out the horses and animals on the property.  Afternoon tea was provided, with tea, coffee and chilled water, along with some yummy fresh Aussie Damper with jam and cream!
Once we got fitted out with our safety helmets and goggles (or sunglasses) we were ready for our informative lesson on how to ride an ATV.  Also, I would highly advise to wear a hat under your helmet, sunscreen and sunnies…as it was hot under our Far North Qld’s sun.  The team at Blazing demonstrated how to use the brakes, and gears and gave us some pointers on turning, which comes in handy!  As this was my first time ever on an ATV I made a mental note on the foot brakes advice! As we got started we slowly headed to the obstacle course which was great fun in itself!  A great way to get comfortable on your new beast, and get adjusted to the turning, gears and breaks….and the soft dirt.  There are even little jumps and tyres to practice your handling skills!  The great staff at Blazing then break you further in groups, based on advanced, beginners, or medium so they really do ensure everyone has a great day.  My husband went off on the more Experienced group, while I went along my way…. But I still managed to create my own dust storm!  The courses on the property are just fantastic!  You travel through the scrub, past ant hills, and even cattle.  It hadn’t rained for a while when we went, so the tracks were dusty – I don’t think I really was prepared how much dirt I’d be covered with. Definitely Denim jeans and T-shirt are recommended. It was FANTASTIC!. They have dirt mounds for jumps, and you travel up and down little valleys, dry creek beds, and even maneuver your ATV through the trees.  Sometimes, the trees, may jump out at you, so be careful!  J I can’t rave on enough how much fun you have…everyone has to do it while they are here on holidays!  At the end of the day you return back, and compare stories of Adventure with freshly sliced tropical fruit and toasted sandwiches – perfect way to finish your afternoon.

It would be great to experience it in the wet too, as it would be a completely different day.
